The New York City Campaign Finance Board unveiled a new mobile application on Wednesday that it hopes will boost political participation via smartphones.

The app, NYC Votes, provides access to voting and election information via smartphones. It will role out in several phases.

NYC Votes will initially feature a countdown to registration deadlines, a location-based look-up for candidates and the ability to check voter registration status. Future features include the NYC Votes Candidate Contribution Tool, which aims to simplify the process of candidates accepting contributions via credit card.

A preliminary version of the app has already been released to 30 local campaigns.
