South Dakota reveals new online vehicle registration, titling system

South Dakota’s Motor Vehicle Division on Monday revealed a new online title and vehicle registration system, called 605Drive.
The new system is expected to help the Department of Revenue agency more seamlessly issue titles and renew registrations.
The work on 605Drive began in June of 2022 with a feasibility study. The previous system, known as SDCars, was dated and functionally deficient, officials said. According to the revenue department’s website, modernizing the system has been a need for many years, as the department had limited support and minimal staff who were knowledgeable about maintaining it.
For South Dakotans, vehicle registration renewals are available via DMV Now kiosks, online and through county treasurer offices.
Additionally, a new partner service platform will be available through the system for licensed motor vehicle dealers and lenders.
In addition to title and registration services, residents will now be able to use the 605Drive online system to apply for special vehicle permits, request specialty plates and disability placards, and look up information about public or private vehicle records.
