Nebraska Drivers Can Now Apply for an Ignition Interlock Permit Online:

The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced that the online driver license services at ClickDMV.ne.gov have been expanded to include obtaining an Ignition Interlock Permit.

Nebraska drivers that have been charged with driving under the influence are able to apply for an Ignition Interlock Permit (IIP) through the DMV. In order to be authorized for the IIP, applicants must first determine if they are eligible by contacting the DMV office, and then the Ignition Interlock device must be installed on the vehicle and an application submitted to the DMV along with proof of device installation. Prior to the release of this new service, citizens who had gone through these steps then still had to find a way to visit their county licensing station in person. Now, they are able to obtain the permit online.

The DMV is working to put as much of this process as possible online to limit the number of times a driver would need to visit a DMV office to obtain the permit. “The addition of this permit type to our Online Driver Services application will greatly reduce the number of people that need to visit a DMV location,” Says Rhonda Lahm, Director of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

In the coming months, the DMV will be announcing the automation of an online IIP eligibility check which will help applicants determine when they will be eligible and what they need to do to become eligible without making any phone calls or visiting the DMV. “We have great plans to continue making this process more streamlined and accessible online,” adds Rhonda Lahm. Future projects will add the application and verification process online as well, making the entire application process of obtaining an IIP available online.

The IIP permit is latest in a long list of available driver licensing services on ClickDMV.ne.gov:

Renew a standard Nebraska Driver License or order a duplicate
Renew a state ID card, or order a duplicate
Obtain a teen driver permit, or request your first driver license
Reinstate a suspended license
Check license points totals

The new IIP licensing service accepts credit card and electronic check for payment. The permit is then mailed to the individual.
