Maryland launches open data platform
Maryland announced the launch of its open data platform on Wednesday as part of an effort to foster government transparency and innovation and help spark entrepreneurial opportunities.
Located at data.maryland.gov, the data can be viewed by type or category, such as administrative, budget, agriculture, economic or demographic. Visualization tools allow users to create charts and maps based on the data and embed these into web documents to share with others.
“Together, we set public goals, relentlessly measure government performance on a weekly basis, broadly share information, and put it on the internet for all to see. We publicly identify our problems and crowd source the solutions with open access to data,” said Governor Martin O’Malley in a prepared statement announcing the initiative. “That’s why today we’re launching data.maryland.gov – a movement away from ideological, hierarchal, bureaucratic governing and toward information-age governing that is fundamentally entrepreneurial, collaborative, relentlessly interactive and performance driven.”
The site is powered by open data platform provider Socrata.
