Pa. police deploys high-tech UAS balloon in hunt for fugitive
Authorities in Pennsylvania have taken to the skies using an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) in their search for a murder suspect, FedScoop reports.
Pennsylvania State Police is using a large Mylar balloon, outfitted with several cameras and classified as an unmanned aircraft system, to monitor the ground from the air. The balloon resembles a weather balloon, Pennsylvania State Police Public Information Officer Trooper Connie Devens told FedScoop, and is tethered to a stationary point on the ground.
Officials have already deployed helicopters in the search for Eric Frein, who last month allegedly shot and killed a Pennsylvania state trooper and wounded another. But Devens said the balloon would cut costs and provide a silent way to conduct the search.
