State Up & Comer of the Year
Sarah Schelle is improving prison safety while helping released prisoners establish stable lives and reducing recidivism. Schelle helped create a risk-assessment tool that uses predictive analytics from SAS to reduce violence in prisons and improve guard safety. With four times the accuracy in predicting violence, staff assaults dropped 50% in six months. Inmate-on-inmate assaults dropped 20%. She helped launch a program that analyzes workforce, education, geographic and corrections data to help DoC match soon-to-be-released offenders with job opportunities, while considering frequent transportation and education limitations. It also matches offenders with certificate programs they can complete before release to increase earning potential.
