North Dakota launches public-facing, online State Data Hub

The North Dakota Information Technology Department on Wednesday launched its State Data Hub, a new public-facing resource that centralizes collection and sharing of the state’s data.
The State Data Hub features dashboards and data provided by the North Dakota Department of Commerce’s State Data Center about state demographics and economic development, such as population, housing and business data. It will serve as the state’s centralized online source of reliable and up-to-date data from multiple sources, and according to a news release, development of the Data Hub was a key component of the Statewide Data Strategy, an NDIT-led initiative that kicked off in 2022.
The hub also pulls data from the U.S. Census Bureau and North Dakota state agencies, among other state and federal sources.
Launching the platform is a significant step forward in the state’s quest to leverage the power of data. Eventually, the hub will expand to include additional data and resources from other state agencies, a news release said, which will further enhance easy access to data for decision-makers and the public.
“The vision of this effort is to harness the value of data to help North Dakota thrive,” North Dakota Chief Data Officer Kimberly Weis said in the release. “The State Data Hub enables agencies to collaborate with the use of trusted data — essential to creating a government that is not just efficient, but also responsive to the needs of its citizens. The Data Hub is a transformational leap in the right direction, making government work better for everyone.”
Additionally, the State Data Hub is expected to play a critical role in supporting the North Dakota Commerce Department’s efforts to drive economic growth and attract investment. By providing access to accurate and timely data, state officials said they hope this initiative “will enable better planning and decision-making across all sectors.”
“Data is a powerful tool —critical to nearly every area of modern life,” State Demographer Nigel Haarstad said in the news release. “The State Data Hub moves North Dakota forward by providing timely, accessible data that supports informed decisions and creates opportunities for our state.”
