Honoring state government’s best
The National Association of State Chief Information Officers honored 11 state government organizations Monday at its 2014 Best Practices awards ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee, that highlighted the exceptional work technology leaders have accomplished over the past year.
The awards, now in their 26th year, recognize state governments officials working in technology who have developed innovative best practices in a wide range of categories that can be used in other states. Projects were selected from a field of more than 100 nominees and pared down to 33 finalists, which were then voted on by NASCIO’s Awards Committee.
“It has been a great privilege to co-chair the NASCIO Awards Committee,” said Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget Director David Behen. “The volume of quality submissions demonstrates the commitment to the utilization of technology to deliver government services and provide greater transparency throughout the country. While some will get trophies, it’s the citizens who really win with the innovation and initiative shown in these outstanding projects.”
Brenda Decker, Nebraska’s chief information officer since 2005, was honored a special recognition award for a “Decade of Dedication.” Decker served as president of NASCIO in 2012-2013.
“It’s been an amazing time working in state government and hopefully I’m not done yet,” Decker said.
The night also marked the final night as association president for Mississippi CIO Craig Orgeron, who passed the presidency to Ohio CIO Stu Davis. Orgeron thanked the more than 600 people in attendance for their support during his tenure.
“It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve you,” Orgeron said. “I thank you for allowing me to serve in this position. It’s been a remarkable experience that has taught me so much.”
