NYC tech office convenes new groups for AI ‘action plan’
The New York City Office of Technology and Innovation announced on Thursday that it is convening an advisory network and steering committee as part of the city’s Artificial Intelligence Action Plan to deploy the technology for the benefit of its communities.
New York City published its AI Action Plan in October 2023 and is on track to either start or complete 29 of the 37 action items outlined in the document, the office said in a press release. The advisory network will consist of subject matter experts in the private sector and academia.
“New York City staked its claim among global leaders on artificial intelligence governance with the release of its landmark AI Action Plan–and we remain ahead of the curve thanks to these updates,” Chief Technology Officer Matthew Fraser said in the release. “As we continue to implement the plan, the knowledge and experiences of city government and industry experts will play an integral role in sharpening our thinking and efforts.”
Fraser will serve as chair of the steering committee, which is comprised of 23 representatives from 16 city agencies. The group is expected to identify potential AI uses, successes, risks and adoption barriers, the release said.
“As artificial intelligence continues to evolve at a rapid pace, we must ensure that our city stands at the forefront of this groundbreaking technology – both embracing the benefits and safeguarding against potential threats,” Department of Citywide Administrative Services Commissioner Dawn Pinnock said. “… We will continue to steer the course towards a future where transformative technologies enrich and empower every New Yorker.”
Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said in the release that automation could help with evaluating crosswalks and other road markings.
