NJ Firearms Application and Registration System

The New Jersey Firearm Applicant Registration System aided in the transition of more than 500 New Jersey police departments from a paper system to an online system.

State IT Innovation of the Year

The New Jersey Firearm Applicant Registration System launched with more than 500 NJ police departments adopting the online system in 2019, transitioning from a paper-based system. Applicants can submit requests for firearm purchaser identification cards, handgun permits and receive electronic updates on major milestones with automation of various checks required for processing, like criminal history and mental health. Local police departments have access to a workflow online, reducing the average processing time from more than three months to less than one month. The first year has seen more than 50,000 applications processed with an online adoption rate of 48%.
