Washington, D.C.; Los Angeles; and Asheville, North Carolina, are among the cities that were awarded for their creative uses of Amazon's cloud-computing platform.

The tech giant is handing out 50,000 in cloud credits for local governments and tech companies.

The goal behind the challenge program is to get city and municipal governments to think about innovating with cloud technology to improve citizen lives.
