North Carolina commissioner named president of National Association of Counties
Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Commissioner George Dunlap has been selected to serve as president of the National Association of Counties, the advocacy, networking and research organization announced Monday. He’ll use the start of his one-year term to launch a national initiative focused on improving outcomes for young people.
The group announced its new president at the end of its 91st annual conference, in New Orleans. His presidential spotlight, “Building Better Futures,” calls on counties to examine how they support youth, invest in prevention before challenges become crises and commit to at least one action that improves opportunities for young people in their communities. He also announced the creation of a Youth Housing and Homelessness Task Force to address one of the most pressing challenges affecting the nation’s youth.
“The future of our counties depends on the future of our youth. The question is not whether we can do more — but how can we do better, together,” Dunlap said in a press release.
A member of the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners for 18 years, including six as board chair, Dunlap previously served as a police officer, Marine and school board chair. He has also chaired NACo’s Justice and Public Safety Committee and serves on the board of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners.
NACo wasn’t the only association to announce a leadership change Monday. The National Association of Secretaries of State named Steve Hobbs, Washington’s secretary of state, as its new president during the organization’s summer conference in Rapid City, South Dakota. Hobbs, who has served as Washington’s secretary of state since 2021, will lead the bipartisan association through July 2027.
