Security ‘incident’ pushes Nevada state websites, phones offline

A number of Nevada’s state websites, online services and phone lines, including those for the Nevada Highway Patrol and Nevada State Police, are experiencing an outage that began over the weekend.
When the Nevada Governor’s Office of Technology said on LinkedIn it began investigating midday on Sunday, it cited a network issue. But in a press release on Monday, the office said the outage is the result of “an early-morning network security incident.”
The office said that network issue is causing some state websites, online services and office phone lines to be slow or temporarily unavailable. This includes the dispatch phone lines of the Nevada Highway Patrol and Nevada State Police.
The state’s main website, NV.gov, still appears to be offline as of Monday, and the Nevada Department of Public Safety’s website also seems to have been impacted.
The technology office said that state government offices will not offer in-person services Monday.
The Governor’s Office of Technology said on LinkedIn it’s working to restore service, and advised the public that if they cannot reach an online service or phone line to try again later. The office also reminded the public that those experiencing emergencies should call 911.
While cyberattacks are a common cause of such disruptions, they are also sometimes caused by other means. South Dakota’s systems went offline for two days last week after a power outage. And a disruption to Pennsylvania’s 911 service last month, officials said, was thanks to a “defect” in an operating system.
