Real-Time Crowding Information

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority rolled out a new program to keep bus riders informed about crowding on public transportation during COVID-19.

Local IT Innovation of the Year

The MBTA recently rolled out a new program to keep bus riders informed about crowding on public transportation — the largest transit agency in the U.S. to do so. This innovation, made possible by Slack, is viewed as best in class across the transit industry, especially as COVID-19 increased the need for riders to make informed decisions based on their comfort level and ability to socially distance. Crowding information is available to riders online, within the Transit App and on digital signage. This innovation necessitated tight coordination with government officials and integration with a variety of IT systems.
