Unlocking the power of 5G for the public sector

5G technology, with its speed, low latency and capacity to handle a massive number of devices simultaneously, will not only enhance the way we communicate but also revolutionize how citizens access government resources and industries such as healthcare and transportation. It represents the backbone of future technological advancements, enabling groundbreaking applications to drive economic growth and improve our quality of life.

T-Mobile’s National Senior Executive for State Government Strategy, Lloyd Levine, sheds light on the transformative potential of 5G technology. He explains that 5G is not just another incremental improvement over its predecessors but is exponentially faster, offering speeds 11 to 15 times faster than 4G. Notably, 5G provides ubiquitous broadband coverage, breaking away from facility-based broadband.

Levine also highlights two compelling real-world use cases. In Georgia, the Department of Driver Services leverages 5G to conduct driver’s license tests without an examiner in the car, enhancing safety during the pandemic. In Washington State, 5G-enabled cameras and AI are deployed to detect wildfires swiftly, resulting in a 95% success rate in keeping wildfires under 10 acres.

“Anywhere you might need broadband speed is now opened to 5g technology,” he says. “Whatever the application is, the nice thing is we are not limited by any one individual’s imagination, just like we’ve seen throughout the computing revolution. If you give people technology like this, they will develop the applications [tailored to their needs]—the people walking around everyday life, the businesses, and the individuals experiencing the challenges of being limited by 4G speeds.

Levine emphasizes that state and local government agencies have an opportunity to harness the power of 5G to enhance their operations, improve public services, and drive economic growth.
