Privacy key as California advances on AI, says state CIO
California Chief Information Officer Liana Bailey-Crimmins says that keeping privacy in mind — and also reminding vendors of the importance of privacy — is a key priority as the state develops governance of artificial intelligence and begins adopting the technology in its agencies. “We know generative AI … it does create interesting challenges because it’s using multiple sources of information. So we did a proof of concept. It was clear in our terms and conditions that state owns the data regardless of where the information was pulled from,” she says in a video interview. She says the state is also keeping an eye on Europe’s privacy work, such as the General Data Protection Regulation, as it continues to establish its own nation-leading privacy work. “You don’t want to take public trust for granted,” she says.
