Washington’s AI order could boost awareness in government, CIO says

On this week’s Priorities podcast, Washington state Chief Information Officer Bill Kehoe says the state’s recent executive order could help agencies better understand the many implications artificial intelligence has for their operations. Kehoe reviews for StateScoop the executive order signed late last month by Gov. Jay Inslee, which plots out the next 12 months of AI policy work in the state. Between concerns of equity, cybersecurity and workforce, Kehoe says his agency and others will be busy evaluating how state government can best use the rapidly advancing technology without incurring unforeseen costs. “Part of what this executive order really does is it generates awareness of risk and a lot of other areas as well, which state agencies may not be aware of,” Kehoe says on the episode.
