Why Georgia is drafting an AI ethics framework
Nikhil Deshpande, Georgia’s chief digital and artificial intelligence officer, said the state is currently developing its ethical AI guidelines with help from an expert: Rose Procter, executive director of the TRUIST Center for Ethical Leadership at the University of North Georgia. Deshpande said that even if no one in state government acts with bad intentions, it’s still possible for undesirable outcomes to arise if the state has not implemented thorough ethical guidelines concerning its uses of AI. “We see this in social media,” he said. “When social media came out, everyone rushed to the adoption and any new tool and any new app that came out, but we didn’t really think about what would be the consequences on kids. And now we see so many unfortunate events happening, and this is where we feel we should be ahead.”
