Big broadband month

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration said yesterday it’s awarded more than $634 million in tribal broadband grants this month, with the final round of nearly $106 million going to five native groups in Arizona. The August grant spree, which benefitted a total of 25 tribal entities spread across 13 states, came out of the NTIA’s Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program, which was created in late 2020 with $1 billion from a federal appropriations act and later replenished with $2 billion from last year’s infrastructure spending law. North Carolina could run the table

NASCIO yesterday named the finalists for its annual State IT Recognition Awards. The finalists represent 15 states across 10 categories that the association says exemplify how technology can be used to “address critical business problems, more easily connect citizens to their government, improve business processes and create new opportunities that improve the lives of citizens." North Carolina alone landed nominations in eight categories, making it a potential "Ben-Hur" of government IT prizes. Colin Wood has more.


U.S. Digital Response interim boss stepping down

U.S. Digital Response interim CEO Jessica Cole will step down from her leadership role on Dec. 1, the nonprofit announced Monday. The group, which was founded early in the COVID-19 pandemic to pair experienced technologists with state and local governments struggling to address the health crisis, also added Code for America founder Jennifer Pahlka to its board of directors.
