Local IT sees a budget boost

A vast majority of city and county CIOs expect their budgets to increase in the next year, especially as local governments continue to worry about preventing cyberattacks and data losses, according to a new survey published by CompTIA’s Public Technology Institute. More than 80% of respondents anticipate some kind of raise, with 33% saying they could see their budgets grow by at least 5% next year. Benjamin Freed reports.

Digitizing without disrupting

Two years of responding to the pandemic cemented nearly every government’s need to increase the focus on digital services. But as flashy as it can be to put public services on a mobile app, these innovations can’t be implemented if they undermine the functions they’re meant to improve, New York State CTO Rajiv Rao told StateScoop last month. “We cannot be disruptive,” he said. “We have to continue to deliver services while transforming to a new channel." Minnesota’s new GIS chief wants local government collaboration

Alison Slaats, formerly a supervisor Minnesota's GIS office, is the state's new chief geospatial information officer, with an eye on local partnerships. "I really care about the collaboration and coordination with our local partners for the purpose of pulling together statewide foundational datasets,” she said in an interview last week.
