Another edtech vendor nightmare

Chicago Public Schools are in the process of notifying the families of about 500,000 current and former students that their personal information was included in a data breach stemming from a ransomware attack last December against Battelle for Kids, an edtech vendor that provides software for teacher evaluations. It adds to growing list of vendors to suffer cybersecurity incidents that ripple across school systems and state lines, following Illuminate Education, where a breach earlier this year has affected numerous school systems, including New York City. Better ransomware investigations needed

A report released by Senate Homeland Security Chairman Gary Peters, D-Mich., this morning asserts that ransomware attacks are surging even as federal efforts to respond to them are not up to the task. The report focuses on the use of cryptocurrency to execute such attacks, but concludes that the government is struggling to keep up in part because  reporting on ransomware attacks and payments is “fragmented and incomplete.” Peters' report counts at least 2,323 attacks in the U.S. last year, but notes that number should be considered "artificially low." CyberScoop's Suzanne Smalley has the the story.


Nailing down coordination

The U.S. House last week passed the State and Local Cybersecurity Act, which encourages closer coordination between the CISA and state, local, tribal and territorial governments. The bill, which passed the Senate earlier this year and now awaits President Biden's signature, largely codifies a number of efforts CISA is already making, like sharing tools and intelligence from the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center.
