Rating the cloud

While IT vendors will gladly brag to their state-government clients that their cloud platforms are rated by FedRAMP, state cybersecurity officials are increasingly interested in applying standards of their own. During StateScoop’s Cybersecurity Modernization Summit last week, officials from Texas and Michigan both described how their agencies have taken steps to take further scrutiny toward their cloud vendors. “What we’re asking is that vendors have the same security controls that we ask of our state agencies,” said Texas CISO Nancy Rainosek. Training up the privacy workforce

Christopher Bramwell, Utah's government operations privacy officer, told StateScoop last week he wants to ensure state agencies and larger localities have certified professionals handling residents' data. He's currently trying to find at least 50 professionals and train them up so agencies can have skilled privacy officials. Ben had the story.


They're getting into ransomware

The long-running cybercrime group FIN7, known for breaking into payment systems and corporate networks, has been moving into ransomware operations, according to researchers at security firm Mandiant. The researchers said Monday that FIN7, which is believed to be behind last summer's Colonial Pipeline hack, has stepped up its use of Maze, Ryuk and other ransomware strains in recent years.
