Finance industry vet named Virginia data officer

Virginia officials on Friday announced that Ken Pfeil, a longtime data security executive for a series of financial services firms, will serve as the commonwealth’s new chief data officer. He's been tasked with moving the commonwealth “toward data-driven policy, evidence-based decision making, and outcome-based performance management.” Pfeil is succeeding Carlos Rivero, Virginia's inaugural CDO, who stepped down late last year. FBI: Ransomware still loves local gov

Local governments were the target of more ransomware attacks in 2021 than any other group of entities besides the education sector, according to an FBI bulletin last week. And as the incidents continue, the financial costs and tangible impacts continue to rack up, the bureau wrote. “These types of attacks can have significant repercussions for local communities by straining financial and operational resources and putting residents at risk for further exploitation,” the notice reads. Vendor wars

Google took aim at Microsoft last Thursday, claiming there’s a growing “monoculture” of the rival company’s software used in government that makes agencies more vulnerable to cyberattacks. A poll commissioned by Google found that a vast majority of federal, state and local workers primarily use Microsoft products. The results were accompanied by a blog post from former CISA official Jeanette Manfra, who's a senior director at Google Cloud. Billy Mitchell has details on FedScoop.
