'Philly is ready'

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney has given the go-ahead for the city to begin exploring a partnership with CityCoins, a cryptocurrency organization that has garnered enthusiasm from mayors in New York City and Miami. City CIO Mark Wheeler said this week that "Philly is ready" for CityCoins to begin minting a Philadelphia-branded token, while Kenney said he's "enthusiastic about the potential of donations" that the city could receive. FCC wants to share ISPs report cards

As the FCC gets ready to distribute a $1.2 billion tranche of payments to fund rural projects in 32 states, it's also making some changes to how it holds internet service providers accountable. The commission's new Rural Broadband Accountability Plan, will alter how the commission audits and tests the network performance of the providers that receive money from the fund, and will also make the results of those audits available to the public. Colin Wood had the story.


Texas launches mobile app for government services

The Texas Department of Information Resources on Monday announced the launch of a new mobile app designed to give the state’s residents access to a variety of government-agency services through a single access point. The new app, TxT, is capable of sending users push notifications when it's time to renew their driver's licenses or vehicle registrations — a feature state CIO Amanda Crawford said she experienced first hand when the app reminded her it was time to take her cars in.
