'It seems scary because it is'

CISA Director Jen Easterly on Saturday offered some advice to governors who sometimes struggle to effectively communicate the urgency of cyber threats and importance of improving cyber hygiene through steps like multi-factor authentication. "If you come from a background that’s not an IT background it’s very daunting. It seems scary because it is," she said during the National Governors Association's winter meeting in Washington. "At the end of the day what we’re trying to do is communicate this topic in a way that people are not so scared of it that their brain shuts off." Benjamin Freed reports.

FCC announces plan to scrutinize ISPs

The FCC on Friday announced that it’s ready to deploy the largest round of broadband funding to date — a $1.2 billion tranche of payments to fund rural projects in 32 states — and that it’s making some changes to how it holds internet service providers accountable. “Today’s announcement means more connectivity is coming to consumers, while we continue our commitment to make sure that funding goes to areas that truly need it,” FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said in a press release. Colin Wood has details.

That's a lot of phony doctors!

California employment officials on Thursday confirmed that the state is still dealing with mass insurance fraud nearly two years into the pandemic. Earlier this month, the California Employment Development Department announced that it had flagged and suspended 345,000 disability checks that were associated with nearly 27,000 “suspicious” medical providers throughout the state — just 485 of whom have verified their identities with authorities. Ryan Johnston has details.

Cleveland's new plow tracker snowed under by 'overwhelming' demand

In the wake of a Jan. 17 snowstorm that dumped 15 inches of snow on Cleveland and left residents frustrated when roads were not being cleared, Mayor Justin Bibb last Thursday announced that the city would try something new: an online snowplow tracker, designed to display the locations of the city’s trucks and which streets they’ve cleared. But as soon as the new site was activated, it experienced an "overwhelming response" that caused it to be unresponsive for several hours, though the interruptions were resolved later Friday. Emily Bamforth reports.

Despite ‘massive strides,’ more work ahead for government on identity

The public sector’s work on digital services needs the safety and security of robust identity and access management to be most effective, according to Auth0’s Salman Ladha. An Auth0 survey shows that only 19% of government officials are “extremely confident” in the authentication experience they’re providing. Although they've made massive strides in their ability to deliver citizen services in response to the pandemic, there’s still quite a bit of work to be done to provide citizen services. Listen to the full interview with Ladha.
