Youngkin makes his first IT move

Virginia Gov.-elect Glenn Youngkin this week said he intends to nominate Margaret “Lyn” McDermid, a former CIO for the Federal Reserve System, to serve as his incoming Cabinet’s secretary of administration, a sprawling position that includes oversight of the commonwealth’s technology policy, government operations and elections. If confirmed, McDermid will oversee the Virginia Information Technologies Agency, which since 2015 has been led by state CIO Nelson Moe. “As the new year unfolds, we are ready to partner with the incoming administration," a VITA spokesperson said. Not the best way to return from the holidays

Thousands of schools in the United States and around the world have had their websites and some other functions knocked offline as a result of a ransomware attack targeting Finalsite, a major web host for K-12 institutions just as students prepared to return from the winter holidays. While the company said it has restored a "vast majority" of its clients' websites, some are still experiencing issues with other services, like email. Ben has details.


An NYC tech shuffle

New York City CIO Jessica Tisch told colleagues this week she's moving into a different role in the administration of new Mayor Eric Adams. "We were entrusted with enormous responsibilities...fundamentally rebuilding the IT infrastructure that supports the vast majority of the City’s operations," she wrote in an email to city tech employees.
