NYC tech chief calls it a day

New York City CTO John Paul Farmer announced last Thursday that he plans to depart city government after the new year, when Eric Adams is sworn in as mayor. Farmer, whom Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed in 2019, oversaw the creation of long-term strategies to address the city's broadband and digital-service needs. Farmer said he'll be spending this week assisting the transition process as Adams' pick for CTO, New York Police Department CIO Matt Fraser, prepares to take over. Ryan Johnston reports.

Money's here, but where's the vision?

States are about to start seeing an influx of cash for cybersecurity, broadband and other programs from the new federal infrastructure law, but the money won't be impactful if they don't have a strategic "vision" of how to spend it, Jim Richberg, the public-sector field CISO at the security software company Fortinet, told StateScoop recently. “Even things earmarked without cyber in the name, you have to recognize there’s a cyber component,” he said.
