Data in disarray

Two weeks after its operations were disrupted by a cybersecurity incident, the Maryland Department of Health is still struggling to resume publishing all of its metrics related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Officials have been able to resume posting hospitalizations, vaccinations and school outbreaks, but other key figures remain stuck, including overall infections and deaths. "It really hamstrings both public policy and individuals making private decisions," said Beth Blauer, the data lead at Johns Hopkins University's Coronavirus Resource Center. Benjamin Freed reports.

Sidewalk Labs shuts down

Alphabet is shutting down Sidewalk Labs, the company behind a scuttled project to build an internet-connected, data-intensive community in Toronto, following founder and CEO Dan Doctoroff’s admission last Thursday that he’s been diagnosed with a deadly neurodegenerative condition, likely ALS. While Sidewalk's plans to build in Toronto fell short, Doctoroff wrote in a Medium post that he was undeterred: "Our comprehensive vision for Toronto provided a global blueprint for climate-positive development," he wrote. Cyber gets $60M in Virginia budget proposal

Weeks before he leaves office, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam last week unveiled a budget proposal that includes $60 million in cybersecurity funding. But it'll be up to Northam's successor, Glenn Youngkin, to see the commonwealth's next budget adopted — and Youngkin called Northam's proposed cyber funding "wholly inadequate." Ben has details.
