More than two weeks after a newspaper reporter showed Missouri officials that a state education agency website was exposing teachers’ Social Security numbers, the state purchased credit-monitoring services for the people whose information may have been affected. Meanwhile, Gov. Mike Parson is sticking by his claim that the St. Louis Post-Dispatch was “hacking” the state government when its reporter notified the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education about the website flaw. “It’s much more than a right click,” he on a local TV interview. “Because you got to talk about decoders and all these kinds of things that were used.” Benjamin Freed decodes the latest.


Vroom vroom

The mapping technology firm Esri announced Monday it’s joining forces with the National League of Cities to help three communities spot gaps in their broadband service. The company plans to work with local agencies in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Butte-Silver Bow, Montana; and Purcellville, Virginia, to develop a broadband speed-test app for residents. Ryan Johnston reports.


Six states win NGA grants to close digital skills gaps

The National Governors Association on Monday announced it’s awarding grants of up to $100,000 each to six states exploring digital-skills initiatives. Officials in Hawaii, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island will form cross-agency teams to examine digital literacy gaps. Of 9.8 million unemployed workers in the U.S., about 3.2 million lack foundational digital skills. Emily Bamforth has details.

New York to serve broadband to 1.6 million people in next three years, de Blasio says

New York City will spend $157 million over the next three years building publicly owned broadband infrastructure serving 1.6 million residents, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced last week as part of the latest update to his plan for achieving universal internet access. "Broadband isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity,” de Blasio, whose term ends Dec. 31, said in a press release. Ryan has more.
