Iowa's long CISO search ends

The State of Iowa has hired Shane Dwyer, formerly the chief information security officer for the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, as its new statewide CISO. Dwyer, who’s worked for the Wisconsin agency since 2015, will fill a position that’s been empty since January 2020, when Jeff Franklin, who’d served as Iowa’s information security chief, became the top cybersecurity official in the office of Secretary of State Paul Pate, overseeing election security operations. Yes, we said murder hornets

Between mapping the latest COVID-19 outbreaks and tracking wildfires, geographic information systems officials on the west coast are staying busy these days and gaining new recognition. And then there are the murder hornets. Washington’s GIS coordinator, Joanne Markert, says on a new episode of the Priorities podcast that she believes her recent work, including efforts to control populations of Asian giant hornets — the invasive insects that got their deadly nickname by ripping honeybees to shreds — elevated the profile of technology and GIS. Colin Wood hosts.

Whistleblower suit over San Diego GIS contract allowed to move forward

A California court on Wednesday allowed a former SAP employee to proceed in a lawsuit against the software giant and the consulting firm Deloitte. The suit alleges that while developing software for the City of San Diego, SAP helped Deloitte win a contract to implement the technology and that Deloitte billed the city for work it never completed. The case stems from a 2014 contract San Diego issued to SAP for the development of geographic information systems software that could help the city map its infrastructure assets. Benjamin Freed has details.

No-nonsense for no insurance

Nearly 2,700 Illinois drivers have been caught without car insurance since July 1, thanks to a new electronic insurance verification program implemented by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, officials confirmed to StateScoop this week. The new Illinois Insurance Verification System automatically verifies vehicle owners’ insurance status at least twice a year at random intervals, ensuring that drivers are complying with state automobile insurance laws. Ryan Johnston has the story.

Hawaii unveils digital COVID-19 'health card'

Hawaii on Wednesday unveiled a digital health credential, becoming the latest state to offer its residents a way to validate that they’ve been vaccinated for COVID-19. The program, which is set to begin Friday, is only for validating vaccination status within Hawaii, officials said, and can’t be used to enter the state. For that, tourists must register with the state’s Safe Travels program. Colin has more.
