Florida struggles to keep top IT staff

A year into its existence, the Florida Digital Service is struggling to hold on to key IT officials under the leadership of state CIO James Grant. The Miami Herald reported last week that Grant, a former lawmaker whom Gov. Ron DeSantis plucked to lead the state's latest IT shakeup, has been criticized for a "chaotic" management style that's resulted in ongoing vacancies in several critical positions, including state CISO, which is unfilled for the third time in 12 months. "Command and control rarely works in IT and has yet to work for Florida’s IT goals," James Taylor, CEO of the Florida Technology Council, told StateScoop. Colin Wood reports.

N.H. town's money likely lost

Officials in Peterborough, New Hampshire, said yesterday the government of the 7,000-person town lost $2.3 million to an email fraud scheme, and that recovering the money is doubtful. Criminals likely operating from a foreign country impersonated both a school district and a local construction firm to trick the town's finance department into making multiple payments to phony accounts. Officials said they do not believe the transactions can be reversed, and are unlikely to be covered by the town's general liability policy. Benjamin Freed has details.

Finally, a dating site for civic tech

San Antonio is enlisting the help of local university researchers to create more data-driven policy across city government, officials at the city’s Office of Innovation told StateScoop. The $7 million agreement with the University of Texas at San Antonio sets the stage for fast-moving and timely collaboration going forward, said Kate Kinnison, the research and development administrator for San Antonio. City officials will be paired with researchers through a custom software platform that Kinnison likened to a dating website. Ryan Johnston has more.

Cyber VC forms advisory group aimed at state and local markets

NightDragon, a Silicon Valley venture capital fund that’s invested in several major cybersecurity firms is launching a new effort today aimed at connecting companies in its current portfolio with state and local government officials. The fund told StateScoop it’s assembled a “consortium” of public-policy advisers and lobbyists — in California, Texas, Florida and New York State, as well as New York City — who’ll pitch officials in those governments on emerging security and surveillance technologies, while helping NightDragon’s investments navigate the public sector. “A lot of companies don’t even enter the government market,” said Katherine Gronberg, the head of NightDragon’s government services practice. Ben has the story.
