Mayors get White House cyber meeting

As the Biden administration continues its attempt to push back against ransomware and other cyberthreats, a group of mayors from around the United States got a virtual briefing Tuesday from Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technology. As the Virginia Employment Commission rushes to pay out claims after a federal class-action settlement, it continues to face challenges with its call center and an ongoing upgrade to its IT systems, a state auditor told lawmakers Tuesday. The state benefits agency, which was ordered in May to resolve 95% of its 92,000 unpaid claims by Sept. 6, is continuing to answer only “a small minority” of the new calls to its call center, said Lauren Axselle, a project leader for the Virginia Joint Legislative Audit and Review Committee. Axselle said the agency's current response rate is even worse than a year ago, when it was inundated by the peak of pandemic-related claims. Colin Wood has more.

Connecticut's new cyber incentive

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont on Tuesday signed legislation making the state the third to offer businesses a safe harbor on data security if they implement one of several sets of cybersecurity controls. The new law says companies in the state won’t receive “punitive damages” over a breach exposing residents’ personally identifiable information — including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, medical records and financial information — if they have a written cybersecurity policy that follows a recognized cybersecurity framework, like those published by NIST or the Center for Internet Security.   Ben has details.

How post-pandemic IT priorities are shifting

A new survey reveals how the current demands to work from anywhere — and longer term needs to accelerate hybrid cloud capabilities — are driving many organizations to realign their enterprise IT priorities. The study looked at investment priorities prior to the pandemic related to infrastructure, operational IT projects and cybersecurity — then compared those responses to those priorities now and over the next two years. We found some surprising results. Read more about the findings.
