Tyler grows, again

Tyler Technologies’ acquisition streak continued Thursday as the government IT provider announced its purchase of VendEngine, a provider of cloud-based software used in correctional facilities, in an all-cash deal valued at $84 million. VendEngine, which has customers in 30 states, publishes communications platforms and financial-management applications used by inmates of jails and prisons, including video-chat services that have been in wide use during the COVID-19 pandemic as many correctional systems replaced in-person visitations with virtual meetings. Benjamin Freed reports.

DOJ gets tougher about ransomware

The Justice Department has required federal prosecutors across the U.S. to more closely track ransomware cases and notify department officials of key developments in the prosecution of hackers, following attacks against fuel and meat distributors. In a memo to U.S. attorneys, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco ordered prosecutors to notify Main Justice whenever they hear about a new ransomware event in their districts, CyberScoop's Sean Lyngaas reports. Another top DOJ official, John Carlin, told Reuters the move effectively puts ransomware on the same tier as terrorism as a law-enforcement priority. Read more on CyberScoop.

A billion more for broadband

The Biden administration yesterday announced a plan to provide nearly $1 billion in broadband expansion, digital literacy and workforce development grants to tribal nations. The new Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program will distribute grants available to all 574 tribal governments, including those in Alaska and Hawaii. “Access to the internet creates access to services. So lack of access to services means a lack of access to vital needs that families and individuals have, and compounds disparities that existed before the pandemic,” Vice President Kamala Harris said at a White House event. Ryan Johnston has the story.

Florida's big cybersecurity buy

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis this week signed a budget that spends $37 million on cybersecurity in the upcoming fiscal year, including on new investments in hardening industrial control defenses, identity management, migrations of government websites to the .gov domain and the creation of a new cybersecurity operations center. The appropriations largely follow the recommendations of a 15-member task force that issued a report to the governor earlier this year. Ben has more.

Identity management improved during pandemic, Iowa officials said

Iowa technology officials speaking at a virtual conference yesterday attributed some of the state’s improved cybersecurity, IT efficiency and simplicity to modernizing their identity and access management system over the last year. "We wanted adoption of a consistent login experience and we wanted a seamless single sign-on for all the applications we use for our jobs,” said Steve Kinney, the state’s chief operating officer, said during the event sponsored by Okta, an identity-management vendor. Ryan has details.
