A map to school reopening

A new set of online maps launched in California are designed to give parents a snapshot on the reopening status of their kids' schools. The maps, which Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled last Friday, show the status — in-person, hybrid or distance learning — of public school districts, charter schools and private schools across the state, which has been battered by the COVID-19 pandemic's winter surge. The new maps were launched as President Joe Biden pushes for a nationwide reopening in K-12 districts, though the state's biggest public school districts remain online-only as officials negotiate with labor unions over vaccinations. Colin Wood reports.

Feds find weak security in Florida water hack

A clearer picture of poor security practices in Oldsmar, Florida, prior to the dangerous hack of its water treatment plant is beginning to emerge, even as an investigation into the matter continues. A report Friday issued by the FBI, CISA, EPA and the Multi-State ISAC suggested that the breach, in which a hacker allegedly tried to raise sodium hydroxide levels to amounts that are harmful to humans, was made possible by lax data protection strategies and exploitation of a software tool, CyberScoop's Tim Starks reports. Email addresses and passwords with domains associated with Oldsmar surfaced days before the breach in what’s being called the COMB data leak, for “Compilation of Many Breaches.” Read more on CyberScoop.

Washington state looks to consolidate cybersecurity after data breach

Lawmakers in Washington state last week started working on a bill centralizing the state government’s cybersecurity operations into a single office. The effort, requested by Gov. Jay Inslee, started after the Feb. 1 disclosure of a data breach by one of the Office of the Washington State Auditor’s software vendors, potentially affecting as many as 1.6 million people. The legislation would make the Office of Cybersecurity a permanent part of state government with broad authorities to set standards across statewide agencies. Benjamin Freed has more.

'Whole person care' works for outgoing inmates in California county

A nearly four-year-old experiment by public health officials in Riverside County, California, is showing that sharing data across government agencies and referring former inmates to services quickly after they’re discharged can greatly reduce the odds of recidivism. The project advances “whole person care” for people leaving correctional facilities, integrating physical health, behavioral health and social services on a single platform. Early results are promising, with researchers seeing a significant drop in the 12-month recidivism rates of more than 6,100 former inmates who've gone through the program. Colin has more.
