From days to minutes

A pilot project testing an automated data feed of potential network compromises cut down the time needed to take defensive measures from days to a few minutes in the state and local governments that participated in the program. The Indicators of Compromise Automation Pilot, conducted by the MS-ISAC and a Johns Hopkins University research lab, tested tools that automatically blocked malicious domains and IP addresses rather than waiting for a human operator to manually enter them into firewalls or other protective systems. 'The year of the dashboard'

The value of data was made clear last year as cities fought to slow the spread of the coronavirus, forcing offices like Kansas City, Missouri’s, DataKC to endure a 10-month “stress test” of its ability to analyze and visualize data for residents and policymakers. Kate Bender, the city's deputy performance officer said the need to provide officials and the public with up-to-date information about COVID-19 helped shape 2020 into "the year of the dashboard.” Ryan Johnston has details.


Bloomberg Philanthropies launches COVID-19 challenge

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced Monday it will award 15 cities $1 million each to expand innovations developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The fifth iteration of the foundation's Mayors Challenge will judge cities on how well they've addressed the health crisis, including economic recovery, public health, the environment and good governance.
