'Future mobility' in the Motor City

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Tuesday the state will create a new agency to lead its mobility initiatives, preparing the state for future innovations in autonomous vehicles and public transportation. Whitmer, appearing at an auto-industry convention hosted in part by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, said the state will form an Office of Future Mobility coordinate public-private partnerships to advance mobility workforce and infrastructure initiatives. She also ordered the state's Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity to "place a greater emphasis" on electric-vehicle manufacturing and deployment. Ryan Johnston reports.

Good cyber-hygiene keeps away the ransomware, San Jose CIO says

As cyberattacks against government have become more sophisticated, the ways government IT organizations defend and respond to them has had to mature as well, Rob Lloyd, the chief information officer of San Jose, California, said Monday. Speaking on a panel at San Francisco CyberTalks, a CyberScoop event, Lloyd said his city has in recent years upped its emphasis on cyber-hygiene and also revised its procurement processes to put its technology vendors to the test. Among the steps San Jose has taken is requiring technology vendors to submit their products to external audits before the city purchases them, Lloyd said. But he's also noticed an internal culture shift toward better employee behavior, with agency leaders engaging more with IT managers. Benjamin Freed has more.

'Light years' from 2016

Also appearing at San Francisco CyberTalks, Chris Krebs, director of the Department of Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and Anne Neuberger, the head of the National Security Agency's Cybersecurity Directorate, said information sharing has become much better in recent years, a trend they attributed to the Russian government's attempts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. "[W]e’ve come miles … light years from where we were in 2016," Krebs said. In particular, he credited the creation of the Election Infrastructure Sharing and Analysis Center, has helped DHS set up the proper channels to help state and local entities assess risks in their systems. A special report on user experience

For a long time, the job of state and local technology leaders has simply been to keep things running smoothly. But the legacy of putting functionality ahead of design is fading as everyone comes to expect government to offer the same intuitive and simple designs they see everywhere else on the internet. It’s no longer enough to be online, and government technology leaders know it. To better understand this trend, StateScoop and EdScoop have put together a series of articles, podcasts and videos on user experience and digital government, including looks at Code for America's future, the accessibility of digitized legal codes, the resurgence of data breaches connected to online-payments platform Click2Gov and a new agency in Colorado modeled after the success of the White House's U.S. Digital Service.
