New Orleans latest apparent victim of Ryuk ransomware

New Orleans officials declared a state of emergency Friday after the city suffered a ransomware attack, prompting the deactivation of more than 4,000 computers and servers across the municipal government. An analysis of an infected file pointed to the presence the virus known as Ryuk, which has infected nearly two dozen other local governments and elicited several six-digit payouts from its victims since late 2018. But New Orleans CIO Kim LaGrue said over the weekend that the city appears to have suffered "very minimal" data loss, thanks to secure system backups and a relatively early detection of the malicious activity. The Jersey tweet sound

State governments use social media to publicize administrative accomplishments or emergency information to thousands of residents. New Jersey does that too, but its lead Twitter account, @NJGov, sprinkles in Jersey-centric observations, memes and other irreverent posts ranging from "The Sopranos" GIFs, rap lyrics and digs against "your mom." The account's authors, with the blessing of Gov. Phil Murphy, tell StateScoop they're just being their “true, authentic Jersey selves.” Ryan Johnston reports.
