Texas' new tech strategy moves 'beyond IoT'

The strategy planning document published earlier this month by the Texas Department of Information Resources moves on from the state's promotion of the "internet of things," the term often used to describe networks of interconnected devices like environmental sensors and traffic cameras. Instead, the state's new technology plan emphasizes the development of a more mature, effective marketplace of digital services for the agencies DIR supports. Ryan Johnston has more.

In praise of the broker model

When Indiana CIO Dewand Neely dropped by our video station at last month's NASCIO conference, he said the evolution of state chief information officers into "brokers" who manage IT services provided by third-party vendors — instead of trying to fix everything in-house — has made technology administration more secure and cost-effective. "We’re changing our role to be more of that broker for our agencies, for our customers, making sure we get the right vendors in ... and making sure they’re delivering acceptable service and secure service," said Neely, who plans to step down Friday after more than 15 years with the Hoosier State. Cities need to lead residents on cybersecurity

StateScoop Associate Publisher Jake Williams is in Barcelona, Spain, attending the Smart City Expo World Congress, and he dropped by a panel of international city-government IT chiefs who talked about the lengths they go to to help their residents avoid online threats.
