Changes ahead in California

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced last week that Amy Tong, the state’s chief information officer since 2016, will step down from that role and become the director of the state Office of Digital Innovation in January. As CIO, Tong’s been credited with advancing the use of agile development in state IT projects, including the establishment of an Innovation Lab shortly after she took the role. Her new office is tasked with modernizing the state’s websites and public-facing digital services. Read the story.

Priorities for '22

Cybersecurity led NASCIO's list of top 10 state IT priorities for the ninth consecutive year, the organization announced this week. Digital services, broadband development and cloud-based services also appeared high on the list again, while budget and cost concerns fell off. That may have occurred after states enjoyed better-than-expected tax revenues and received several rounds of federal pandemic relief. Benjamin Freed has more.


Another city cryptocurrency? Austin could be next

CityCoins, the cryptocurrency group behind digital tokens dedicated to Miami and New York City, may target Austin for its next city-based cryptocurrency, but officials there told StateScoop they were unfamiliar with the platform. CityCoins users in October voted to create a new digital currency called AustinCoin that, if activated and mined, would begin funneling 30% of any gains into a digital wallet that’s would only be accessible by the Texas capital.
