Eight Black state chief information officers joined a virtual roundtable Wednesday to share how they landed in their jobs and how they’ve navigated public service and the tech industry, while also steering their governments through the COVID-19 pandemic. “This is long overdue,” said Ohio CIO Ervan Rodgers, who moderated the discussion. Sharing notes on algorithmic bias

New York City officials last month joined a group of international civic technologists and university researchers for an “open conversation” around how to improve digital privacy and algorithmic bias in city governments, New York's director of AI, Neal Parikh, told StateScoop. The city is a founding member of the Cities Coalition for Digital Rights, a group formed in 2018 to promote goals like equitable internet access, privacy and transparency. Florida House advances broad privacy bill as states weigh data protections

The Florida House of Representatives on Wednesday approved data privacy legislation that would offer residents broad protections on how their personal data is collected by online businesses and the ability to sue companies that misuse that information. But an attorney who represents companies that could be sued under the bill said the legislation's motivation is less about consumer protection and more about Florida's Republican leaders sticking it to big tech over perceived grievances like Twitter and Facebook suspending former President Donald Trump’s accounts.
