Weeding out the PPE phonies

For eight months, states have been trying to obtain as much personal protective equipment, like masks and hospital gowns, as possible as they weather the COVID-19 pandemic. And, as previously reported, not all of the vendors have been on the up-and-up. In California, which has had its share of dealings with PPE hucksters, officials have made use of a cloud-based customer relationship management system from Salesforce to help keep tabs on vendors. "It was like a needle in a haystack,” Grady Joseph, an assistant director at the state Office of Emergency Services, said of finding legit supplies. Ryan Johnston reports.

NASCIO extends leaders' terms

The National Association of State Chief Information Officers announced Tuesday that New Hampshire CIO Denis Goulet will remain as the group’s president through its 2020-21 calendar. The group also extended the terms of Utah CIO Mike Hussey as vice president and Maryland’s Michael Leahy as secretary-treasurer. The group also added two new members to its directors committee. Bracing for the final week

In the final week before Election Day, the IT and cybersecurity officials who work in state election offices say that after more than a year's worth of preparations — including responses to the pandemic — their organizations are ready for the big show. “We’re checking the locks on the doors and that the windows are shut and walking through that checklist," said Jeff Franklin, the chief cybersecurity officer in the office of Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate. Odd timing

A report released yesterday by the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General drew sharp criticisms from CISA Director Chris Krebs and state election organizations after it criticized some of the agency's election-security work, with Krebs calling it "poorly timed" and misleading, CyberScoop's Sean Lyngaas reports. The report said CISA has not done enough to counter physical threats to election infrastructure, which the agency, the National Association of State Election Directors and National Association of Secretaries of State all rebutted. These guys, again

Prosecutors in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, on Tuesday unveiled 15 felony charges against a pair of right-wing operatives over a recent robocall aimed at discouraging minority voters from casting their ballots by mail, similar to an indictment filed earlier this month by authorities in Michigan. Authorities said that Jack Burkman and his frequent partner-in-chicanery Jacob Wohl, were behind a phone call that went out to thousands of Cleveland-area voters in late August. Burkman and Wohl pleaded not guilty to the Michigan charges, and are expected to appear in Ohio soon. Ben has more.
