COVID-19: One Year In (2021)

The necessarily rushed move to digitize services, modernize aging systems and equip employees to work from any location dominated the conversations taking place in governments around the country over the last year. State and local government’s initial concerns with finding enough laptops for their employees and establishing secure networking environments have evolved into conversations about what lessons from the past 12 months they will integrate into future policies.

In universities and colleges, too, administrators and faculty are reconsidering their models for recruitment, teaching and student engagement. Undergraduates are stopping out at rates that alarm many in higher education, with some predicting it will take years for the workforce to fully recover.

The past year was tough on the world — here’s what people in state and local government, and higher education, are thinking about as they pick up the pieces. This is StateScoop and EdScoop’s special report on the COVID-19 pandemic, one year in.
